A Converter is an element that generates destroys resources to produce new resources.

Converter can have four different modes:

  1. Active Converters fire once every second (or once every turn for Turn-Based Diagrams).
  2. Clickable Converters fire only when a user activates it by clicking on it.
  3. Triggered Converters fire only when they receive a resource through a Trigger.
  4. Passive Converters fire only when they have accumulated enough resources to fire. A converter is passive when it is not triggered, not clickable and when it is not directly connected to Pools to pull resources from. Passive Converters do not discriminate where the resources are coming from, they fire once the required number of resources is collected.

Conceptually a Converter is a combination of a Drain and a Source and acts as a combination of the two with respect to incoming and outgoing Connections (See the equivalent pattern below).

Sometimes it is easy to confuse Converters and Traders. The difference between them is that with a Converter a number of resources are destroyed and another number are created, as a result the total number of resources can change, whereas with a trader the resources are traded between elements and their number must stay the same.
